Welcome to the Island

Today we arrived on the island of Kalymnos and we’re already in love with the place. We had to spend 24h in Athens as Olympic Airlines cancelled our originally scheduled flight to the next day. After going through security in the Athens airport, a group of travelers with forearms twice as large as the typical European had all gathered around gate B24. After a very expensive 24h in Athens around very up tight French vacationers, we were finally among brethren despite the various languages spoken on the airplane (French, German, Dutch, Italian, Slovene, and Greek). As we descended upon the island of glimmering clifflines, everyone had smiles on their faces. This is going to be a very good trip. There is one main road around the island and we are staying in the town of Massouri- close to a majority of the climbing on Kalymnos. The road is full of lamp-lit restaurants, scooter rentals, studio apartments, and climbing shops. We arrived to late to climb, but wandered the streets and watched the sun set over the island of Telendos (across the bay). We ate an amazing dinner of greek salad, pizza, and wine at Café Prego and will call it a night, perusing the headlamp-lit pages of our new guidebook to plan for the days ahead. This is MY kind of vacation!
